Note 2003: These extracts were taken from a handwritten document sent to the late Grace Land, granddaughter of George Dodd Grove, in 1980 by the late Margaret O'Connor, granddaughter of Sir George Grove. The extracts by an unknown person are incomplete, but nevertheless very interesting. Further research is intended. The Court Rolls are now held in the Records Office in Aylesbury, Bucks.

Explanation of early legal terms used:

Inter Alia (Latin) - Amongst other things.
Tenant - The early meaning of tenant was "one who holds or possesses lands or tenements by any kind of title"
Tenenit or Teneuit - Word not yet recognised. Variation of tenure?
Tenement - The holding of lands and all other freehold interests
Moiety - A half or part of the manor
Crofte - A piece of enclosed ground, used for tillage or pasture: in most parts a small piece of arable land attached to a house
Messuage - A dwelling house with its outbuildings and adjacent land
Capital Messuage - That occupied by the owner of a property containing several messuages
Herr (Herriot from early Eng Law) - A feudal service, originally consisting of weapons, horses, or other military equipments, restored to the lord on the death of his tenant; afterwards the render of the best live beast or dead chattel of a deceased tenant due by legal custom to the lord of whom he held. Now an incident of manorial tenures only.
Relieffe - A payment, varying in value and kind according to rank and tenure, made to the overlord by the heir of a feudal tenant on taking up possession of the vacant estate
Suite of Court (Feudal law) - Attendance by the tenant at the Court of his Lord
Ward (Feudal law) - The control and use of lands of a deceased tenant by knight-service
Fealty - The obligation of fidelity on the part of a feudal tenant to his Lord. The recognition of this obligation by taking an oath upon a book.
