Holy Trinity Church ( built 1213), Penn, Buckinghamshire, showing Grove graves to the left of the church.

(Plot G) The following are extracts from a 1947 graveyard plan prepared by ATE Randall, Sacristan.

When the new burial ground to the west of the Vicarage Garden path was given to the Church by Walter Morris Grove in the early years of the 20th century, a small piece was reserved for the burial of the Grove family.
Plot H (in south west corner of churchyard reserved for burial of Grove family).
These Groves are not on the family tree in this website.

Inside the church, there is a Grove grave in the right hand aisle (now covered by carpet) which reads: "here lieth the Body of Jonathan Grove of this Parish who died November 9th 1731. Aged 87 years and 7 months."
Wall plaques commemorating Eleanor Grove and Edmund Grove l890-1940.
Eleanor Grove who was born in 1827 was the youngest sister of Sir George Grove. She did pioneering work to further the education of women in the l9th century, and was very involved in the foundation and work of Bedford College for Women in London, now part of London University.



Henley and Badgemore Cemetery on the Fairmile (the B480) at Henley-on-Thames towards Stonor, in Grave 38 Section 9 - looking from the chapel the grave is in front on the right.
Plot was bought by George Dodd Grove of Fawley on 13th October, 1911 for £8.10s.

There are several Grove graves in Pishill Church graveyard (on the right and left hand side of the path near the wall). The inscriptions are old and difficult to decipher.

Sir George Grove was the son of Thomas Grove, second son of Edmund (Yeoman) Grove.

There is a commemorative plaque on the wall of the house where Sir George lived. It was erected by the London Borough of Lewisham. It reads:

Grove was a civil engineer, specialising in lighthouses, until his appointment as first Secretary of the Crystal Palace Company at Sydenham led him into a new career. His duties included writing the programme notes for the Saturday concerts and he soon became an international expert on music. The great Dictionary of Music and Musicians which he founded is still flourishing in its sixth edition.

Directions to Henley and Badgemore Cemetery - from Henley, cemetery is on left just past the turning on right signposted to Stonor.

Researched by Ann and Sidney Gomar with cousin Jane Smith (on holiday from Australia) October 2001. Visited Henley and Fawley Bottom. Jane remembered attending Great Uncle George Joseph Grove's funeral when aged 16 before she emigrated to Australia.

Directions to Pishill Church - go past Stonor and turn left up track marked to Pishill Church. The existence of the graves in Pishill Churchyard was recalled by Rita Cressy (daughter of Grace Mary Batty nee Grove) aged 88 in her nursing home in Sevenoaks, and discovered by Peter Trotter and his daughter Penny, with Ann and Sidney Gomar. Peter and Penny were on holiday from Tasmania in 2001. Also visited Fawley Bottom and Penn.
